Question: what is a fair price to replace tioming belt on o4 wrangler

my 04 se wrangler died in mid-ride as i pulled into the parking lot at the airport and i had it towed home. guy diagnosed it as bad timing belt,,gave me an estimate of four hundre3d dollars to fix with no guarentees as to condition of v alves,.,ios it worth the risk. still owe a year and a half of paymaents on it?
