Question: why does my 5.3 burn oil

2005 Chevy 5.3 with 57,000 miles burns 3 quarts between oil changes. I checked the pcv tube for oil and it was dry. What should I check next?

The oil is by passing your piston rings. Do you got real thick heavy black smoke coming out of your exhaust? If not you probably got a leak somewhere if your using that much.
